Back to work — 3 guaranteed events on the first day back

I wrote of my dread of returning to work — now here are my predictions for 3rd January!

In an article a few days ago, I talked about my autistic struggles with the Christmas period. The lack of routine in particular is desperately challenging for me, as my structure and stability is removed for nearly two weeks. On that basis, 3rd January should be a positive celebration as I return to life with a calendar and to-do list, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Disclaimer: I know the first day back is difficult for everyone. For me, it’s doubly difficult at this time. Firstly, my job is in desperate jeopardy at the moment. I’ve experienced some real problems with being poorly treated and at times undermined and victimised in my current role, which makes it a pretty unpleasant place to contemplate going back to. Secondly, I’m returning from four weeks’ of annual leave which I’d saved up for when my first child was born at the end of November! As such, it’s not just a return to work after 10 days away; it’s lifting up the laptop lid for the first time in over a month.

So, here are my three predictions for things that will happen on day one of 2023 as a working year. Apologies in advance for the cynicism, but I am sure many of you will appreciate it and it will resonate with you!
